Portland, OR — e4usa made a significant impact at the ASEE 2024 Annual Conference, held from June 22 to June 26. This year's conference showcased e4usa's dedication to broadening participation in engineering education and fostering an inclusive community.
Before the official conference began, e4usa held its annual in-person retreat on Saturday at Portland State University. This retreat followed a successful ASEE Teacher Conference led by e4usa’s own Katey Shirey, who did an excellent job guiding the group. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to meet in person, reflect on their progress, and look forward to the bright future ahead for e4usa.
June 22: e4usa kicked off the official conference with the workshop "Engineering for US All (e4usa) and How 'Us All' Includes You!" led by Dr. Jennifer Kouo and Dr. Stacy S. Klein-Gardner. This session highlighted the initiative’s inclusive approach to engineering education.
June 23: The e4usa team participated in the workshop "Learning Experiences for All: Using Universal Design for Learning" and engaged with attendees at the Welcome Reception & Taste of the Town at Booth 701.
June 24: e4usa showcased its research in the Pre-College Engineering Education Division Poster Session, presenting on topics such as broadening participation and community inclusion of individuals with autism. The team also contributed to sessions like "Lisa’s Legacy: Guiding Students Toward Engineering Careers" and the panel "Developing a K-16 Design Community of Practice." The sponsor tech session "From Evidence-based Research to Impact" highlighted e4usa's commitment to translating research into tangible outcomes.
June 25: e4usa continued to inspire with presentations during "Bart’s Big Plan: Engaging High Schoolers in Engineering Adventures" and participation in the "K-20 Engineering Pathways" session.
June 26: The conference concluded with e4usa's involvement in the NSF Grantees Poster Session during the Networking Break, showcasing the ongoing efforts and achievements of the initiative.
e4usa’s booth, located in a prime position at the front of the exhibit hall, saw a constant stream of visitors excited to engage with our team. This strategic placement was made possible thanks to the support of the Clark School of Engineering.
Each year, the momentum around e4usa grows, with more people returning to learn about the initiative and find ways to collaborate. Attendees were eager to explore new opportunities to work with e4usa, reflecting the program's growing recognition and impact.
Throughout the conference, e4usa made numerous connections with future partners from universities, industry, and teachers in the Portland, Oregon area. The team is actively following up with all potential leads, aiming to expand e4usa's reach and impact on engineering education.
e4usa extends its gratitude to all presenters and participants, including Dr. Darryll Pines, Dr. Stacy S. Klein-Gardner, Dr. Samuel Graham, Dr. Jennifer Kouo, Dr. Adam Carberry, Dr. Medha Dalal, Dr. Jeannie Chipps, Colleen Murray, Abubakr Hamid, Andrew Green, Jialing Wu, Nicolas Leger, and many more. Special thanks go to the e4usa teachers—Jim Muscarella, Christine Zito, Kevin Martz, Michael Piccione, and Shawn Ackley—for sharing their invaluable insights and experiences.
Continued thanks go to the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, for their unwavering support and promotion of e4usa.
