Teachers engage in e4usa professional learning (PL) throughout the year to ensure they are fully prepared and supported.
The mission of e4usa encompasses both students and teachers. Paramount to the success of e4usa is the construction and delivery of PL experiences throughout the year to prepare and support teachers with different levels of engineering training and instruction as they implement the different programs of study within the e4usa curriculum.

The e4usa curriculum engages students in hands-on engineering design experiences to address real-world problems in their communities, and to see themselves as engineers. Educators help students build engineering and professional skills so they can contribute to a more diverse and inclusive industry that solves some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
e4usa offers ongoing professional learning opportunities for teachers at all levels of engineering background. These hands-on, collaborative learning experiences prepare teachers to successfully support their students in using the e4usa curriculum, developing technical knowledge and skills, and creatively solving realistic problems with their peers. All of e4usa’s professional learning options ensure that teachers are well-prepared and supported throughout the program.

In 2022, the e4usa New Teacher Professional Learning course received the Engineering Teacher Professional Development Endorsement from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Teachers and coaches who participate in e4usa’s professional learning offerings are eligible to receive Continuing Education Units (CEU) from the University of Maryland.
By participating in the yearlong e4usa New Teacher Professional Learning, educators will:
- Gain in-depth knowledge of e4usa’s four threads and recognize how they demonstrate the universal concept “e4usa is for US all.”
- Experience and reflect on selected hands-on activities from the e4usa curriculum to better understand the e4usa student experience.
- Develop techniques for planning and delivering lessons and units within the e4usa framework, with hands-on guidance and support.
- Understand and utilize the essential features of the MyDesign Scoring Rubric and MyDesign Platform.
- Engage directly with the e4usa Community of Practice to establish meaningful relationships with educators, coaches, staff, and university and industry liaisons.

Teacher Progress Snapshots & Reflections (TPSR)
The TPSR is a yearlong opportunity for teachers to leverage their strengths, address challenges, and make progress on goals, and share with the greater e4usa community their efforts. The snapshots and reflection questions provided to teachers also support fellow e4usa teachers and the e4usa team with regard to continually evolving the e4usa Curriculum, Professional Learning, and Community of Practice.

In the fall, teachers will learn more about the MyDesign Scoring Rubric and the platform.
Winter Professional Development
Gather together with fellow e4usa teachers to reflect and prepare for the rest of the school year.

Each new teacher has support from the e4usa Community of Practice.

Each teacher will be assigned an e4usa Coach and join a team of fellow e4usa teachers. Each month the e4usa Coach and team meet and stay in contact throughout the year to provide collaborative support.

Each teacher is assigned a university and/or industry liaison. Liaisons provide additional support to teachers and students throughout the year, including support with resources, project ideas, and engineering expertise.

I began teaching engineering in 2019 and stumbled across e4usa during my graduate school work. I was looking for more support in how to teach engineering, especially since I am not an engineer. Joining e4usa has allowed me to become a more confident engineering teacher, and has given me the support I needed through the professional learning environment. I have continued to teach e4usa because I see the positive impact that the curriculum has on my students. After completing this course, my students have a better understanding of the engineering design process, and who engineers are. They are better prepared to work effectively in small teams, to present their ideas and projects to others, and to write succinctly about an engineering project from beginning to end.
Engineering and more importantly, engineering skills are important for young people to learn about. If they have a handle on how to solve a problem then they can control their world to a certain extent and feel accomplishment with success. The professional learning experiences I have had with the e4usa team have been great. There is a lot of thought in what is shared with us during PD. My first PD experience taught me what I would soon teach my students. Going through the lessons and the hands-on activities allowed me to comprehend the activities and the lessons better than going in cold. The Community of Practice in the e4usa Hub is a great way to ask questions, show off what your students are doing, and connect with other members of the team.
The community of practice gave me a whole new friends grew who help me figure out hard things, cheer me on when I am feeling doubt in myself, and offer advice and strategies that I carry into my classroom. The professionals I have been able to meet through this process are amazing. e4usa brings these people into my life and that resource can sometimes feel like a lifeline when you are trying to guide your students in building a wind turbine generator. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been able to bring my students because of e4usa.

The e4usa Hub launched in 2024 and is a centralized location to access the following:

e4usa Connect is an especially important component of the e4usa Community of Practice and affords all e4usa educators, both new and returning, to communicate, ask questions, and share resources.

e4usa + Making CAD Professional Development Series - $ 500
New and returning teachers teaching e4usa + Making are invited to begin this asynchronous course that will orient you to teaching e4usa+Making and provide you with the drawing and CAD instruction needed for success.
Asynchronous Modules
You will complete 12 asynchronous PD modules on the e4usa learning hub. Each learning module corresponds with a CAD component of the e4usa+Making curriculum, which are sprinkled into Units 1 and 2.
Synchronous Office Hours
Bi-weekly office hours will be provided for e4usa+Making teachers every other Tuesday from 7-8 PM ET. Office hours will start on September 3, 2024, and conclude on April 15, 2025. During these office hours, facilitators Michael Piccione (an e4usa veteran teacher from Fairfax, VA) and Katey Shirey (e4usa PL team) will share a 10-minute tutorial on an e4usa+Making topic, then offer small-group/individual support for teachers who require specific help and guidance. In addition to this support, a dedicated channel on the e4usa Hub will be provided for e4usa+Making conversations and needs.

e4usa’s Returning Teacher Professional Development guides educators as they dig more deeply into specific components of the e4usa curriculum, including assessment and scoring using the MyDesign Scoring Rubric. Frequently Asked Questions
e4usa teachers will receive a list of materials for Units 1 and 2. These materials are typically easy to obtain and are low-cost. As students progress to further units to solve design challenges found in the community, there is no supplies list as it depends on the problem. Typically, teachers purchase supplies costing approximately $500 per class.
Yes! We can provide more specific guidance on teaching the e4usa curriculum in a single semester as a block (double-period length) course. It cannot be taught as a single semester of a full-year course. We will also pair you with an e4usa Coach with experience teaching e4usa on a semester block schedule.
An e4usa Coach is returning teacher with years of experience teaching e4usa. e4usa Coaches receive specific training to effectively support their team of e4usa teachers. The Coach and team meet online monthly, and also stay in contact using another method of communication (e.g., e4usa Connect in the e4usa Hub; e-mail).
An e4usa Liaison is a practicing engineer who agrees to volunteer in your classroom, typically about 3 hours per month. e4usa finds these volunteers - with your help if you wish - and connects you with them. Liaisons can be university faculty or staff or engineers who work in industry - or occasionally a retired engineer. The e4usa Liaisons also receive professional development to know how to work with high school teachers and students. Throughout the year, you and your Liaison will be connected about ways in which they can help you and your students. Admittance to your school property is at the discretion of your school and Liaisons should follow all normal procedures for access.
An e4usa Returning Teacher has completed their first year of teaching e4usa and has engaged in all required professional learning as a new teacher, including the e4usa New Teacher Summer Professional Development, MyDesign Scoring Rubric and Platform Professional Development (i.e, MyDesign 1 Professional Development), and Winter Professional Development, and has participated continuously in the Community of Practice (CoP).
Paying for professional development is an investment in the continual growth of educators. To select the appropriate e4usa professional development, teachers should evaluate their needs and identify how the professional development offerings can enhance their teaching and student outcomes in engineering. Teachers' professional goals and aspirations in engineering education should also guide their selection, ensuring the selected professional developments support their career development.

The professional development and community of practice options are designed to provide opportunities for each teacher to customize their learning to further your professional growth and enhance their impact as an e4usa educator. There are no minimum requirements for engaging in professional development as a returning teacher. However, as a model for your own students, we certainly hope that you will continuously seek opportunities to strengthen your skills and extend your knowledge.
We are continuously seeking ways to enhance our support for teachers and to ensure that our professional learning not only meets but exceeds the needs of e4usa educators. We’ll continuously be adding new professional development options on different topics, as well as evolve our past professional developments. For example, the MyDesign professional developments have undergone exciting changes and we invite you to re-engage with those offerings.
