Professional Learning
e4usa provides professional learning (PL) throughout the year to prepare and support teachers
The mission of Engineering for US All (e4usa) encompasses both students and teachers. Paramount to the success of e4usa is the construction and delivery of professional learning (PL) experiences throughout the year to prepare and support teachers with different levels of engineering training and instruction as they implement the course.
As a result of engaging in e4usa PD and PL, teachers and coaches receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the University of Maryland.
The new e4usa Hub is now live! Join our Hub to learn more about upcoming Professional Learning opportunities, attend free social gatherings and meet other teachers in the e4usa community.
e4usa+Making PD Series
e4usa is pleased to announce a new PD series on e4usa+making to help e4usa teachers experience the skills taught in e4usa+making and learn about using them in their e4usa+making instruction. e4usa+making is a new e4usa course that layers CAD drawing skills onto Units 1-4 of e4usa.
- July 17 Synchronous PD Kick-off is free for all new and returning teachers.
- Engagement in the rest of the series (modules and office hours) is free for all MD teachers and $150 for non-MD teachers.
- Available for new e4usa teachers who will participate in new teacher summer PD and for returning e4usa teachers.

I began teaching engineering in 2019 and stumbled across e4usa during my graduate school work. I was looking for more support in how to teach engineering, especially since I am not an engineer. Joining e4usa has allowed me to become a more confident engineering teacher, and has given me the support I needed through the professional learning environment. I have continued to teach e4usa because I see the positive impact that the curriculum has on my students. After completing this course, my students have a better understanding of the engineering design process, and who engineers are. They are better prepared to work effectively in small teams, to present their ideas and projects to others, and to write succinctly about an engineering project from beginning to end.
Engineering and more importantly, engineering skills are important for young people to learn about. If they have a handle on how to solve a problem then they can control their world to a certain extent and feel accomplishment with success. The professional learning experiences I have had with the e4usa team have been great. There is a lot of thought in what is shared with us during PD. My first PD experience taught me what I would soon teach my students. Going through the lessons and the hands-on activities allowed me to comprehend the activities and the lessons better than going in cold. The Community of Practice in the e4usa Hub is a great way to ask questions, show off what your students are doing, and connect with other members of the team.
The community of practice gave me a whole new friends grew who help me figure out hard things, cheer me on when I am feeling doubt in myself, and offer advice and strategies that I carry into my classroom. The professionals I have been able to meet through this process are amazing. e4usa brings these people into my life and that resource can sometimes feel like a lifeline when you are trying to guide your students in building a wind turbine generator. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been able to bring my students because of e4usa.

Returning to teaching e4usa?
e4usa’s Returning Teacher Professional Development guides educators as they dig more deeply into specific components of the e4usa curriculum, including assessment and scoring using the MyDesign Scoring Rubric. Experienced e4usa teachers work in collaboration to discuss strategies for effectively using e4usa’s tools and resources.
Returning e4usa teachers also engage in additional asynchronous learning activities before and between professional learning opportunities to continue building and refining their skills.
I can tell you, I am a better teacher because of this program. The e4usa program allowed me to grow as an educator in a way I never had before. That is 100% why I keep coming back to this program. I get better and better at my job every year because of the meaningful professional development opportunities and the support from colleagues around the country.

New and returning teachers
In Unit 1, students will learn the fundamentals of hand drawing including hand drawing orthogonal projections to scale with a ruler, the basics of isometric drawings, and what a multiview engineering drawing includes.
Unit 2 builds upon these basics by repeating them as CAD drawings, integrating primary and advanced extrusions, properties of features, multipart assemblies, mating and connections, and multiview drawings in CAD with a bill of materials.
Synchronous PD Kick-off
The PD series will begin with an orientation to e4usa+Making on July 17 from 11 AM ET to noon ET and is free for all to attend. You will meet your facilitators and be invited to begin an asynchronous course that will orient you to teaching e4usa+Making and provide you with the drawing and CAD instruction needed for success.
You also have the opportunity to engage in Asynchronous PD Modules and Synchronous Office Hours. Teachers in Maryland are able to participate in the modules and office hours for free, and non-Maryland teachers need only pay $150.
Asynchronous PD Modules
You will complete 12 asynchronous PD modules on the e4usa learning hub. Each learning module corresponds with a CAD component of the e4usa+Making curriculum, which are sprinkled into Units 1 and 2.
Synchronous Office Hours
Bi-weekly office hours will be provided for e4usa+Making teachers every other Tuesday from 7-8 PM ET. Office hours will start on September 3, 2024, and conclude on April 15, 2025. During these office hours, facilitators Michael Piccione (an e4usa veteran teacher from Fairfax, VA) and Katey Shirey (e4usa PL team) will share a 10-minute tutorial on an e4usa+Making topic, then offer small-group/individual support for teachers who require specific help and guidance. In addition to this support, a dedicated channel on the e4usa Hub will be provided for e4usa+Making conversations and needs.
If you are interested in joining the Synchronous PD Kick-off on July 17 from 11 AM to Noon ET and are interested in the Asynchronous PD Modules and Synchronous Office Hours, please complete this form.

Paying for professional development is an investment in the continual growth of educators. It's crucial to consider the direct benefits of engaging in e4usa professional development, like enhancing your engineering teaching skills, aligning with the latest educational standards, and connecting with a network of engineering educators.
e4usa aims to empower teachers with the resources and knowledge to effectively deliver engineering content, which can significantly enrich the student learning experience. By investing in this professional development, you’re not just improving your own skills, but also contributing to building a stronger foundation in engineering education for your students.
Let’s explore cost-effective ways to access these resources, possibly through school funding, grants, or scholarships, to ensure you can participate without bearing the financial burden alone. Please reach out to professional-learning@e4usa.org to discuss different opportunities and options for paying for professional development. We want to work with every school to ensure educators receive the professional development they are seeking!
With so many amazing professional development offerings, we acknowledge that it can be difficult to decide! To select the appropriate e4usa professional development, teachers should evaluate their needs and identify how the professional development offerings can enhance their teaching and student outcomes in engineering. Teachers' professional goals and aspirations in engineering education should also guide their selection, ensuring the selected professional developments support their career development.
Please reach out to professional-learning@e4usa.org if you have questions or need further assistance with deciding which professional developments to complete!
Additionally, we’ll be asking e4usa teachers for input throughout the year to offer again professional developments that teachers may have missed over the summer and to develop new professional developments!
The professional development and community of practice options are designed to provide opportunities for each teacher to customize their learning to further your professional growth and enhance their impact as an e4usa educator. There are no minimum requirements for engaging in professional development as a returning teacher. However, as a model for your own students, we certainly hope that you will continuously seek opportunities to strengthen your skills and extend your knowledge.
We are continuously seeking ways to enhance our support for teachers and to ensure that our professional learning not only meets but exceeds the needs of e4usa educators. We’ll continuously be adding new professional development options on different topics, as well as evolve our past professional developments. For example, the MyDesign professional developments have undergone exciting changes and we invite you to re-engage with those offerings.
As returning teachers, you have invaluable experiences and are incredible resources to new e4usa educators. We hope that you will always participate in our e4usa professional developments and the community of practice.
Absolutely! e4usa hopes to retain and continuously support the growth of e4usa Coaches, who are essential to the success of e4usa teachers and the Community of Practice!
